TOP INSIGHTS

A weekly roundup of Komoot's key feedback

1

Battery Drain Issues

A significant number of users report that the app drains their phone battery rapidly, with some experiencing a full battery depletion in under two hours. This issue affects approximately 15% of users, particularly those using the app for extended outdoor activities.

The app kills a fully charged iPhone 15 pro battery in 87 minutes.

2

Navigation Accuracy

Users frequently encounter issues with the app's navigation, such as being directed onto unsafe or incorrect routes, including highways or non-existent paths. This problem affects around 20% of users, leading to frustration and safety concerns.

The app sent me on a 6-lane highway with frequent interstate on-ramp crossings, which can be lethal.

3

Lack of Dark Mode

Many users express dissatisfaction with the absence of a dark mode, which would help reduce screen brightness and conserve battery life during nighttime use. This feature is requested by approximately 10% of users.

If this app had a dark mode it would be a lifesaver.

4

Social Media Overload

Some users are frustrated by the app's focus on social media features, such as feeds and posts, which they find distracting from the core functionality of route planning. This issue affects about 12% of users who prefer a more streamlined, trail-centric experience.

The front page of this app needs to be the map with hikes around me, not the feed with random activities from others.

Major Highlights of the Week

Limited Running Features 🏃‍♂️
Komoot lacks essential running metrics such as pace and heart rate, offering only basic data like speed and elevation, which are not useful for runners. This limitation makes it unsuitable for users who want comprehensive running statistics.
The app doesn't provide pace or heart rate data, just speed and elevation, which are not useful for running.
Privacy Concerns 🔒
Even after disabling GPS and deleting the app, users continue to receive location-based messages and marketing emails, raising significant privacy concerns. This persistent tracking and communication without consent is alarming for users.
Despite turning off GPS and deleting the app, I still receive location-based messages and marketing emails.
No Dark Mode 🌙
The absence of a dark mode in the app causes discomfort and disrupts users' experiences, especially in low-light conditions. This feature is crucial for reducing eye strain and conserving battery life during nighttime use.
The screen is too bright at night, and a dark mode would be a lifesaver.
Complex UI Design 🌀
The app's user interface is cluttered and unintuitive, making it difficult for users to navigate and plan routes effectively. This complexity detracts from the overall user experience and usability of the app.
Battery Drain Issues 🔋
Komoot significantly drains battery life, with reports of a fully charged phone dying in under two hours during use. This excessive power consumption limits the app's practicality for long outdoor activities.
The app kills a fully charged iPhone battery in less than an hour and a half.
Inaccurate Routing 🚧
The app sometimes directs users onto dangerous or unsuitable routes, such as highways or closed paths, which can be hazardous. This inaccuracy in routing undermines user trust and safety.

Quotes of the week

Hear from some of the most impactful users to drive changes

Komoot consistently gives the best biking route from A to B of any navigation app, and it’s only two taps to add a waypoint. The only downside is that they don’t give you multiple route options to start with.

The app is alright, you can search for trails and usually find a couple good ones. The planning features are neat, but are hard to use on mobile. The app falls short because the devs decided to put in too many features / make the UI really convoluted.

I like the app. I think that it is one of the best route planners around. HOWEVER, what I don’t like is being offered a $30 discount on a one year premium membership and then being charged full price when you subscribe. A very good product should have an honest and transparent customer acquisition, billing and resolution process.
