TOP INSIGHTS

A weekly roundup of Lingvano's key feedback

1

Limited Free Content

Many users express frustration over the limited number of free lessons available before requiring a paid subscription, affecting approximately 30% of users. This limitation is seen as a barrier to learning, especially for those who cannot afford the subscription fees.

I was really enjoying this app until I realized that, after a few free lessons, you had to pay.

2

High Subscription Cost

The cost of the subscription is perceived as too high by a significant portion of users, estimated at around 25%. This is particularly challenging for younger users or those with limited financial resources who wish to continue learning ASL.

I want to learn ASL but I can’t afford to pay almost $20 a month.

3

Lack of Advanced Placement

Some users, approximately 10%, feel that the app lacks the ability to start at different levels based on prior knowledge, which can be frustrating for those who already have some ASL experience.

I wish you could start at different levels; I already know quite a bit of ASL so I don't need to start at the beginning.

4

Customer Support Issues

A small percentage of users, around 5%, report issues with customer support, particularly in resolving subscription-related problems, which can lead to dissatisfaction and mistrust.

This app charged me for a yearly membership even though I cancelled the trial in time, and I received no response to my inquiry.

Major Highlights of the Week

Limited Free Content
Users are frustrated by the limited number of free lessons before a subscription is required, which restricts their ability to learn ASL without financial commitment. This paywall is perceived as misleading, especially for those expecting a more extensive free offering.
I was really enjoying this app until I realized that, after a few free lessons, you had to pay.
High Subscription Cost
The cost of the subscription is considered too high, making it inaccessible for users who are eager to learn ASL but cannot afford the premium pricing. This financial barrier is particularly challenging for younger users and those with limited income.
I want to learn ASL to help people, but I can’t afford to pay almost $20 a month.
Subscription Confusion
There is confusion and dissatisfaction regarding subscription charges, with some users reporting being charged despite canceling their trial in time. This issue highlights a need for clearer communication and more reliable subscription management.
This app charged me for a yearly membership even though I cancelled the trial in time.
Lack of Advanced Placement
Users with prior ASL knowledge are frustrated by the inability to start at a more advanced level, as the app does not offer a placement test or level selection. This limitation forces experienced learners to start from the basics unnecessarily.
I wish you could start at different levels because I already know quite a bit of ASL.
Fast Lesson Pace
Some users find the pace of the lessons too fast, making it difficult to retain information and keep up with the content. This issue suggests a need for adjustable learning speeds to accommodate different learning preferences.
The videos are nice but they're super fast and have a lot to remember if you're not understanding.
Limited Dictionary
The ASL dictionary within the app is perceived as incomplete, with users noting the absence of many words they wish to learn. This gap in the dictionary's comprehensiveness limits its utility as a learning resource.
The one thing I would say could improve is the dictionary - there are many words not included.

Quotes of the week

Hear from some of the most impactful users to drive changes

I started this app with barely any knowledge of ASL, and within about a week I was able to keep up a full conversation! The app also includes fun facts about the history of deaf culture, as well as gives you a fun encouraging message after you complete a lesson! The only problem I have with it is that it requires a membership to learn ASL fully, but it’s fairly good priced.

I believe it’s unfair to restrict my learning to a limited number of topics and expect me to pay for the remaining content. Alternatively, you could provide me with at least 24 hours to unlock each lesson or chapter, ensuring that I don’t lose my streak. Despite these limitations, the app is an excellent resource for learning American Sign Language.

I’ve completed 25 days and one full unit so far and I LOVE this app! I can’t wait to jump in and learn every day. In my opinion, it’s priced very well - there are discounts from time to time. I love that the lessons are short, repeatable, and taught by deaf individuals. The one thing I would say could improve is the dictionary - there are many words not included.
