TOP INSIGHTS

A weekly roundup of Firefox: Private, Safe Browser's key feedback

1

Password Manager Issues

Several users report significant problems with the password manager, including passwords not saving or being wiped after updates. This issue affects approximately 5-10% of users, causing frustration and forcing them to rely on other browsers for password management.

After migrating from Chrome, my passwords were saved as blanks and now they're completely wiped after the update.

2

UI and Navigation Frustrations

Users express dissatisfaction with the user interface, particularly the navigation bar's behavior and the address bar's placement. These issues affect around 10-15% of users, who find the navigation cumbersome and less intuitive compared to other browsers.

The navigation bar requires too much effort to show, and the address bar's move to the top is inconvenient.

3

Dark Mode and Visual Bugs

Some users experience visual issues with dark mode, where images and website elements do not display correctly. This affects about 3-5% of users, leading to a less satisfactory browsing experience.

In night mode, some images display negatively, like a red apple showing as a light green inverted image.

4

Lack of Add-ons and Extensions

A portion of users are disappointed by the lack of support for add-ons and extensions, particularly ad blockers, on iOS devices. This affects approximately 5-10% of users, who feel this limitation reduces the browser's functionality.

Firefox on iOS doesn't support add-ons, which defeats the purpose of using it for ad blocking.

Major Highlights of the Week

Password Manager Issues
The password manager fails to save or retain passwords, causing users to lose login information and rendering the feature ineffective. This issue forces users to rely on other browsers for password management, undermining Firefox's utility.
After migrating from Chrome, all my passwords were saved as blanks and recent updates wiped them completely.
UI Navigation Frustrations
The navigation bar requires excessive effort to display, and the home button's functionality is seen as redundant, adding unnecessary friction to common actions. This design choice disrupts user flow and diminishes the app's usability.
Dark Mode Icon Discontent
The dark mode icon design is criticized for not aligning with standard iOS aesthetics, leading to user dissatisfaction. This inconsistency in design may deter users from using the app.
The dark mode icon is so poorly designed that I'm considering not using the app until it's changed.
Autocomplete History Failure
URLs no longer autocomplete from history, complicating the process of revisiting frequently accessed sites. This regression in functionality frustrates users who rely on efficient navigation.
URLs don't autocomplete from history anymore, making it harder to access sites I've visited before.
Search Result Irrelevance
Search results are increasingly irrelevant, often ignoring the search subject and providing outdated or unrelated information. This decline in search quality diminishes the browser's effectiveness.
Add-on Support Limitations
Lack of support for add-ons, particularly ad blockers, on iOS limits Firefox's appeal as a privacy-focused browser. This shortcoming drives users to consider alternative browsers with better ad-blocking capabilities.
Firefox on iPhone doesn't support ad blockers, which defeats the purpose of using it for privacy.

Quotes of the week

Hear from some of the most impactful users to drive changes

I recently converted over to Firefox from Chrome, and while my experience has mostly been good, there seem to be substantial issues with the Password manager. When I migrated all my bookmarks and passwords over from Chrome, my passwords were saved as blanks. Since the latest update, it appears that all of my passwords have been completely wiped, making the password manager feature useless.

Firefox is my main browser on my PC and I’ve tried switching to the Firefox app but some minor annoyances with the UI make it difficult. The navigation bar requires too much upwards movement before it starts to show, and the home button on the navigation bar feels useless, adding friction for a very common action.

I use Firefox on all my Linux machines and MacOS. No need to use it on iPadOS and iOS if it doesn’t support add-ons. Use Orion instead or another with real ad blocking baked in.
